I take a lot of flower pictures, I guess because they are around and easy subjects. One of my favorites is the water lilly. They aren't around as much, obviously, you have to have a pond.
There's something about them, pushing up through the water, I always get the feeling the petals are just screaming for sunlight. As a photo subject, they are quite convenient because there aren't any weeds or other obstructions, and then tend to be isolated.

Often you can create another image, with a different feel, simply by cropping. Cropping is a basic function of all image editing programs. Here I want to really emphasize the plant, and add some tension by having many petals extend out of frame.
Now I have taken the same cropped image and applied a water color painting effect in Photoshop. This filter works particularly well on flowers, I suppose because flowers are a common water color painting subject.
