I just love having a macro lens. This subject is really tiny. maybe a half inch across at the widest. Macro lenses take you into the smallest worlds.
This was a pleasing image in color, but I thought going B&W would give it some extra pop.
I found a preset in Topaz B&W called "warm tone II smooth" that gave me just what I was looking for. As always, check out the original image on the Continue link below.

My dad has always loved gardening and working in the yard. Sometime back I found out Peonies are his favorite. His birthday was this week. Fortunately we happen to have some in our yard. So here's a happy birthday pic for Dad.

I love macro shots with water drops. They are hard to do though. About the time you get everything in order, the drop falls off!

Hey everyone, time for a new series. I struggled with a name for this series. In the end, I wanted something simple. This is "decay art" and it is courtesy old train cars. So I'm just going with "train art."
I want to give you a brief background. Have mentioned several times on the blog how inspired I have been by the images of John Barclay's friend Bill, unfortunately no longer with us. He was a master of composition, often of small areas he found.
When I went to the Palouse last summer, for my last morning I decided to shoot some old railcars. My intention was to capture some interesting looking graffiti.
And I shot the graffiti for a while. Then something happened. This does not occur often for me, but it is a thrill when it does. Sort of a "sixth sense." Something in these scenes was calling me. I just sort of leaned on my tripod mounted camera and slowly stared at the tired old railcars. And I started seeing these patterns. Tiny. But vibrant.
All of a sudden it was like I was seeing in a completely new way. It was a "Bill Moment." It felt like I could just float through the air and effortlessly see interesting patterns that were made by man and nature. Paint and rust. Steel and decades of forces to break it down.
Well, hopefully the images in this series lead up to my somewhat breathless introduction. These were all shot with the 180mm macro, and most of the areas are just a few inches wide.

One of my friend John Barclay's favorite (photographic) expressions is "yummy light." Yesterday as the sun was coming up I noticed just that outside my office door. I took a little stroll in the yard and saw several possibilities for macro shooting. It's been months since I brought out the trusty macro lens.
I had a very enjoyable few minutes playing before my real work day started. I remember macros!

Last day of this series. Maybe you are getting tired of water droplets on leaves? What can I say, it was kind of wet. The droplets are one of things I really like in macro photography. This scene and resulting image caught my eye mainly due to the unusual color. There aren't a lot of purple plants, are there? This is the purple smoke bush. They grow very well here.

This one has a lot of appeal to me. As I often mention, I'm a big fan of images that have few tones. And I like "negative space," i.e. the area at lower left. I guess I'm getting in a bit of fall color shooting after all?

As I walked along looking for subjects I found this plant, in this amazing backlight. It was about 3 pm, turned out to be a very good time for this kind of shooting.

Although I have posted a fair share of flowers here on the blog, I don't know that any have been upside down. I tried focusing on the stem, and the foreground leaves were blurred. It was nice too, but I prefer this one.

At these distances (inches), and working without a tripod, it sure is hard to focus. Shot about six frames in order to get this one. Something new for me...
