This shot proves there is life in Death Valley. In the foreground, you can see vegetation as well as a lone tree. You can also see the color variations in the rock due to the high mineral content. It's a geologic wonderland!
The 300mm is a "long lens" or telephoto. One of the effects of these lenses is that they tend to pull the elements together, making them appear closer to each other than they really are. It works to a nice effect in this image.

There are several overlapping mountain ranges here, which the telephoto lens "stacks" together. I think the detail in the darker rock is really amazing, and I like how the lighter range in the foreground splits the two darker ones.
