One of the guys i work with is a real lighthouse afficianado. He always has a gorgeous Lighthouse calendar in his office. This month's image is of the Pigeon Point Lighthouse in Big Sur CA. It's a very cool shot, at night, with the big light on, and the side of the tower nicely it up. Obviously done for that calendar shoot.
So I thought I'd revisit my shots from this lighthouse from waaaaaay back in summer 2003. You know, with a Canon 10D? That would have been the third generation Canon DSLR. I looked at my images and as I often do when I look at shots from back in those days thought "ugh!" So flat by comparison to today's images (due to the cameras being so much better).
I do recall this particular day and what was trying to do. I was parked back on Highway 1, put the camera on the tripod, and waited around for good old Mr Sun to reach out and give the lighthouse a kiss. It took quite a while, but a hole in the clouds appeared and I got what I was looking for.
One of the things I learned from my good friend John Barclay is that Topaz Adjust is a very easy way to give flat images a boost. And you can do this without going as far as the signature Topaz Look. So I thought I'd give it a try, and I was very happy with this result. Just played with the boost and other sliders. Topaz Adjust make this really easy because the "hover tip" on each slider is so informative. When I came back to LR, I did a tiny WB adjustment to cool it off just a bit. More like how the ocean feels to me.
